See attached photo of 'tree' cotton in a home garden in Senegal. This is short staple that is handspun into traditional garments. I have also heard of tree cotton in perennial systems in Nepal, a sort of permaculture system. A contact in coffee also once showed me a picture of home grown cotton from the South of South Korea. It is done, but staple lengths are short compared to the mass of the need of the spinning industry.
